Gate of the Future

As part of a comprehensive modernization and innovation journey, an existing airport gate at Frankfurt Airport was upgraded to meet the latest technological and new operational standards. The objective was to optimize processes for passengers and employees, increase operational efficiency, and meet the growing demands of modern air travel.

The gate becomes an intelligent, adaptive platform - operationally efficient, empowering our employees, and noticeably more comfortable for travelers.

To make this vision tangible, a digital twin of Gates A16 and A17 was developed. Within this digital model, multiple scenarios were simulated to intentionally design the gate of tomorrow. The concept integrates three key dimensions: Operational Efficiency, Atmosphere, and Refresh & Recharge.

The design is grounded in benchmarks, expert input from the Ground Product Solutions team of the Lufthansa Group, colleagues from L/G, and direct passenger feedback. Using Virtual Reality, passengers were able to experience and evaluate the future gate.

The future of travel in A classic

By integrating new technologies, improving workflows, and implementing a contemporary design, the gate was enhanced to support a more efficient passenger flow and a higher level of service quality. The modernization included both technical systems and infrastructure improvements, enabling a smoother boarding process and a more comfortable experience for travelers.

The gate of the future combines operational efficiency, ambient experience, and refresh & recharge to create an efficient, welcoming, and enjoyable travel experience.

Operational Efficiency

At Gate A16, intelligent technologies create a seamless and connected passenger experience. Two large LED walls and three 360-degree screens provide real-time flight information, gate updates, and dynamic content, ensuring passengers stay informed at all times.

Advanced passenger counting and LiDAR technology enable accurate traffic monitoring, movement analysis, and efficient capacity management. Smart boarding and security systems help prevent unauthorized double passages, while automated workflows support smooth and efficient airport operations.

The result is a modern gate environment that combines innovation, operational excellence, and an enhanced passenger journey.

In the future, processes are managed flexibly via mobile devices. Sensor-based boarding supervision detects tailgating in real-time, while the integration of gate and stand data creates a seamless operational overview. AI-driven decision-support systems proactively provide recommendations, identify bottlenecks early, and assist in steering the boarding process. Infrastructure is no longer triggered manually. It responds automatically, through data, sensors, and interconnected systems communicating via APIs.

Ambient Experience

© Fraport

Designed and implemented by partner Fraport with passenger comfort in mind, Gate A16 offers a welcoming and relaxing environment that enhances the overall travel experience. Thoughtfully designed furniture, dynamic lighting concepts, carefully selected artwork, and acoustic optimization create an inviting atmosphere, while convenient water dispensers and dedicated play areas for children add comfort and enjoyment for travelers of all ages.

Refresh & Recharge

To further enhance the passenger experience, we listened closely to our customers. Based on their feedback, we identified the top three wishes for relaxing and recharging at the gate:

  • 24/7 vending machines offering food and beverages at any time of day
  • Easy access to refreshments directly within the gate area
  • A distinctive Lufthansa-branded environment that creates a premium atmosphere

These additions are planned as next steps, bringing an even more comfortable and premium travel experience to the ground.

This project demonstrates how innovative solutions and forward-looking infrastructure can strengthen the operational performance of an international aviation hub while continuously improving the passenger journey. More gate optimizations will follow…
"For us, premium applies not only in the air, but also on the ground – that, too, is Lufthansa. At Gate A16, our guests experience how future-proof processes make the start of their journey more pleasant and more efficient. The 'Gate of the Future' is another milestone on our joint path with Fraport. Frankfurt is the hub with the best connections and the greatest connectivity in Europe – and that is exactly what we want to develop further together."
